Seeking ancestry of James Courtney (Courtenay, Courteney, Courtne, Courtnay, Courtnell,
Courtnall) about 1640 possibly in British American Colonies. Immigrated 1661 to Maryland
possibly after completing a term of indenture to Dr. Robert Ellyson [Elliston], a
physician, attorney, and member of Va. House of Burgesses. Granted 100 acres of land in
Dorchester Co. in 1664. First appeared in Virginia in 1668. He died 1698 in Cople Parish,
Westmoreland, Co. Virginia. Left wife Mary and seven children: James, Mary, William, John,
Hannah, Martha, and Frances Courtney.

The following query was submitted to the Courtenay Society on behalf of member Marilyn E. Sanderlin by her brother, Charles F. Crabtree III (a member also): The coat-of-arms found on old silver from the 'Warner Hall' estate in Virginia, USA, contains six quarterings which includes the families of LEWIS, HOWELL, BRUCE, COURTENAY, FIELDING and WARNER. I am interested in the connection of the COURTENAY family with any of these other families represented in the quarterings. The quartering of the BRUCE family as well as the COURTENAY family also remains unexplained. A marriage between any two of the above named families would be prior to 1703. Since the coat-of-arms includes the Fielding family the date of 1703 was chosen because this is the birth date of the 1st Fielding who married into the Lewis family. The connection is most probably between the LEWIS and HOWELL families. Both families are of Welsh descent. Any information would be appreciated.

(This query is from her brother, Charles F. Crabtree III, a member also) crabtree@airmail.netThe following query was submitted to the Courtenay Society by Dr. Brett G. Courtenay,
Courtenay Society Local Corresponding Secretary, Australia. For some time I have been
attempting to find how my great grandfather got the name Courtenay! He was born about
1850. He consistently gives his birth place (children's birth certificates and his
marriage certificate) as Middlesex or Ealing, London. No record of his birth can be found.
Tony Rowland has been unable to help either.
He gave his mother's name as Sarah Parsons and his father's name as Thomas Courtenay at
his marriage. However, he keeps using different Christian names. On his marriage he used
Lionello Louis. On his children's birth registrations he was entered as Lionel Lewis
except on one occasion, the death of a child, where he used the name Henry. Interestingly,
this was the only occasion other than his marriage where he had been the informant.
I have had a look through the Crossle file in case he came from Ireland but do not seem to
be able to find any mention. The reason for writing to you is to see if you have any ideas
from your own file or any other suggestions where I may go from here. It is something that
I have spent a lot of time chasing without much success.

Dr. Brett G. CourtenayThe following query was submitted to the Courtenay Society by member Gael Courtney:
1. Is there any specific information regarding the how/when & why of the spelling
changed from "Courtenay" to "Courtney," especially in Ireland?
2. I am researching John Courtney, who I believe is from Dundalk, County Louth. His son,
Michael Courtney (born in Dundalk, County Louth) married Bridget Cavanagh on Feb. 2, 1879
in Dundalk, County Louth. John could have been born somewhere between 1805 - 1822.
Any information would be appreciated.

comments : Anne, daughter of Peter Courtenay, married Gilbert Holcombe.
There seems to be a debate on whether Anne and Gilbert had a son Thomas Holcombe who
emigrated to the United States. Are there any facts to confirm this? I know there are
plenty of Americans including myself who claim descent from Thomas Holcombe.
Peter Courtenay is descended from Powderham Castle

comments : Hugh de Courtney was born around mid-late 1400s. He was married to Lady
Katherine Tollemanche and their son was Walter de Courtney whose daughter Gwendaline de
Courtenay married a Wm. de Wellesley around 1532.
We also have a more recent line Mary Courtney b 1805 in Pendleton County Ky married a John
Pike 4-18-1832. She died in 1870s in Ky. We do not have her family.
Both these Courtney lines come from my father's side, but are separate. Mary Courtney
comes from my father's father's side...she was my g-g-g grandmother and the de Courtney
line comes from my dad's side on his mother's side...the de Courtneys married into the de
Wellesley and the name later changed to Wesley in England with Walter wesley/Westley born
in England.
I am very interested in researching our family lines. Thank you for any help you may be
able to give us.

That is about all I know and I would be very interested in recieving some more information on the Courtney family. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am trying to find information on a Dorcas Courtney who married a Rev John Bennett. Their names are mentioned in a diary that was written by one of their grandsons a Dr. Walter Bennett b. 22 May 1745, Ireland, died 21 Dec. 1812, Christian County, Kentuckty. Dr. Walter was the son of Dr. George Bennett b. 5 Feb 1717, Ireland, d. unknown, and Alice Coles. Dr. Walter married a Jennie Wyatt. I am a descendant of Dr. Walter's and would love to have more information on the Courtney family as the name Courtney is still used as a first name in our family and I would like to know more about them.

It is not known if they were born in Worcester MA or if they came over to the US with their parents from Ireland. Michael married Bertha Moran and had 8 children Donald, Joseph, Anna MAe, Margaret, Jerome, Eugene, Francis, and Edward. My husband's grandfather was Joseph James Courtney. We don't know when he was born; we think somewhere around 1900. Michael's brother Daniel and also married (?). They had 5 children Anna , Margaret, Mary, Jeremiah, and Catherine. Exactly where were they from and when did Hannah Splaine and Jeremiah come to the states from Ireland. Where did they settle. Did they have more children than Michael and Daniel. I don't know who Daniel married but he and his wife had 5 children Anna, Margaret, Mary, Jeremiah, and Catherine. Michael Courtney married Bertha Moran. They resided at 33 Colton St. for many years. They had eight children Donald, Joseph, Anna Mae, Margaret, Jerome, Eugene, Francis, and Edward. The birth and marriages and death dates of these are all unknown except for my husband's grandfather, Joseph James. His birth date or place of birth is not known.

>I have accumulated vast, well-documented records on John, Christian and all of their
children but Katie which I
am willing to share. The family tradition (undocumented) states that John COURTNEY'S
parents both died at sea when the family was enroute to America; John was taken on as the
Captain's Cabin Boy and sailed the Atlantic for some time. Later, he sailed with the
Voyageurs in the Great Lakes Furtrade. My earliest documentation for him places him in
Detroit in 1791. Why did he use the name "Jean Baptiste"? Modern accounts state
he was an Englishman. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Query 169: I am interested in the Courtney family. Especially in the coat of arms or family crest.

> comments=Thank you very much for your original mail, it has been a help to me, now
that i have got the Sir John Irving Courtenay, I am very interested in the Courtenays who
left Newry and settlrd at Charleston in 1791. My interest is further heightened by the
letter from Philip Crossle to WM.A. Courtenay at an address Newry. USA. One of the lines I
was working on was that a brach of the Courtenay family originally from Newry in Ireland
founded a town called Newry in the USA. Could this be possible. Iwould be very
greatful if you can help as I would like to recognise the role of the Courtenay family in
Newry, i do have details of their burial stone in St. Patrisk's churchyard in Newry but i
would love to know more of the American connection.

comments=Peggy Courtney was born about 1837 in Co. Louth. Her father may
have been Patrick Courtney. On 19 Apr 1849, at the age of 12, Peggy
witnessed an agrarian murder and was taken into protective custody for one
year. In 1910, she was interviewed by Tomas MacCuileannain recalling her
account of what occurred.
In 1828 the Tithe Applotment Books show a Patt Courtney held 2a. 2r. 18p of
land in the townland of Courtbane, Co. Louth.
Peggy married Owen McArdle (presumably from Co. Monaghan) probably during
the 1850's. They had 9, possibly 12, children.
Is there any way to verify where my Courtney's originated?
Thank you.

St. John,
Sorry for the delay. I have been very busy with family activities lately. It is nearing the end of soccer season here, Cameron (our middle son) is having a birthday party sleepover, and fall is definetly upon us.
I believe our connection is through Thomas Rogers and Katherine de Courtenay. I will put what I have of a few generations of Katherine's ancestors down below.
I would love to have you point out any mistakes or common ancestors.
Ron
in quiet little North YarmouthHello Ron,
By all means, send your report attached to (or part of) an e-mail message. I will take a look at it and see what I have. I have records on several American lines. The complete database is available to Courtenay Society members as a Courtenay Society publication.
Best regards,

Subject: Courtney question
St.John,Hello. My name is Ron Graham. And I have been searching for some of my Courtenay ancestors for a little bit now.
I recently got a letter from the Courtenay Society and your name and e-mail were listed.I was wondering if I might send over a report with what Courtenays I have, so you might take a look at them.
It would be wonderful if we found a common ancestors, but regardless I was hoping you might give it a quick check to see if it has any obvious mistakes or omissions.

I thought my web site on medieval English genealogy might be of interest to
you if you hadn't already come across it:
http://www.medievalgenealogy.org.uk/
I've attempted to provide some useful resources for those researching
medieval English ancestry, including a guide to sources, collections of
links to source material and medieval family histories on the Internet, and
a medieval English calendar.
I have included a link to your Courtenay web pages on the second page of
"Medieval English families on the Internet":

comments=Do you have amongst your Courtenays a Philip of that ilk, who
married Louisa Bell on 15 November 1812 at East Barnet, Hertford, England,
and had four children, Philip, Louisa, Hayley and Frank? It is said that
Philip the father was MP for Bridgwater, Somerste, and that Hayley was a
(British?) army officer, and Frank was Private Secretary to Viscount
Dalhousie, Viceroy of India.
Louisa was a distant cousin of mine, and I'm hoping tio trace her
descendants down to the present day - if any there be. The Bells were
Extremely Numerous and Prolific! so I'm having a lot of fun trying to sort
ourt more than 150 loose ends since 1800.

ancestor=Richard Courtney, Mary Ann Courtney, Andrew Courtney
comments=Mary Ann Courtney m 15 April 1870 in Ballymena, Co. Antrim, Church
of St. Patrick to Thomas Lennox. Her father Richard Courtney listed as
overseer at Braidwater Spinning located in Ballymena. We know he came to
Ballymena at around 1862 when the Mill was chartered, from some unknown
place. Her brother Andrew H Courtney was living in Australia in 6 Jan 1919
at Emsley, 26 Hume St, Malvern, Victoria, Australia. In a letter that date,
Andrew spoke of relatives William and Richard, indicating William was
recovering at home from the war in Egypt and France, and that Richard was
expected back that week. William and Richard would either be children of
Andrew or nephews.
We are seeking information on any of the above, as that may lead us to other
information. The primary goal is to determine the relation of this family
within the Courtenay line. Beyond that, it would be interesting to locate
other descendants of Richard Sr.
Mary Jane Courtney Lennox had at least six children, one being Mary Jane b
1871 in Belfast and I think married a Crawford. Anna Courtney Lennox, my
grandmother, b 12 June 1880 in Belfast. Anna came to the US, and in 1910
married William Wilson McNeary.
If you know of Courtney genealogists in Melbourne, I would be delighted to
contact them.
Thank you for any assistance you can give.
Sincerely,
Bill McNeary

comments=I have an unusual enquiry with very limited background information
I'm afraid. My great grandfather's name was given as Peter Courtenay on his
birth certificate but on his marriage and death certificates his name is
Peter Easton. His children all had the surname Easton hence my own name,
Thomas Easton. The Courtenay name disappeared as a surname but we have a
family tradition to give one of our sons Courtenay as a middle name. My son
is Peter Courtenay Easton. All these events took place in the town of
Bathgate, Scotland.
My father told me that Peter Courtenay was unofficially adopted by the
Easton family and took on their surname, but he didn't know what the
circumstances were. Since my father died several years ago I have no living
relatives to help me understand this Courtenay/Easton connection. I don't
currently have access to the birth/marriage/death certificates.
If anyone in their researches has found a Peter Courtenay, possibly born
around 1870 (give or take ten years) in the town of Bathgate, West Lothian,
Scotland then I'd be delighted to hear from you.
I realise this is a vague request but this family mystery has puzzled me for
some time. It's possible the scant detail I've given here might ring a bell
with someone.
Thankyou for any help or direction you can provide. I have enjoyed looking
through your excellent website. Genealogy is a completely new subject for
me.

Believed to have emmigrated to the USA as a young man around 1900. Died in Columbus Ohio
circa 1950. Very little is known about him. His son Thomas Courtney (my grandfather)
settled in Dayton Ohio about that time and worked for Ohio Bell until retirement. His son
(my father) Thomas M. Courtney was one of five sons. Any information that would help me
trace Hugh's origins would be appreciated.

Query 266: Margaret Courtenay, wife of Theobald Grenville
----- Original Message -----
From: caramut@bigpond.com
Sent: Friday, January 17, 2003 3:02 AM Subject: Courtenay Research
Dear Sir/Madam,
Attached is a document I put together as the result of a discussion about Margaret Courtenay, wife of Theobald Grenville, on the newsgroup soc.genealogy.medieval. It discusses who cannot be the parents of Margaret Courtenay and as a result directly contradicts the Devon Visitation and most of the unsourced pedigrees of the Grenville families.
I am a member of the Courtenay Society and I have also sent this to Powderham however I thought you might like to post it on your website as the Grenville/Courtenay marriage is one of the most quoted gateway marriages for people trying to find royal descent.
sincerely
Louise Staley
Caramut

A summary of who cannot be the parents of
Margaret Courtenay, wife of Theobald Grenville.
Theobald Grenville is said to have married a Margaret Courtenay. Various pedigrees,
notably the Devon Visitation and the Grenville History by Granville show this Margaret
Courtenay to be the daughter of Hugh Courtenay of Haccombe and his wife Maud
Beaumont. She is also described in Roskell™s History of Parliament as a sister of Edward
Courtenay, iothe blindln earl of Devon and his wife Maud Camoys. This would also
make her the sister of Hugh Courtenay of Haccombe.
This paper discusses all the known Hugh & Margaret Courtenays of the period and
comes to the conclusion that the Margaret Courtenay who married Theobald
Grenville could not be the daughter of any of them.
On 26 July 1381 John Grenville presented Robert Braybroke to Bideford and Thomas
Cary to Kilkhampton on 8th September of the same year "being then described as
son and heir of Sir Theobald de Grenvile, deceased." (Granville p54) On the basis that
he presented to Bideford and that was the gift of the lord of the manor, it appears he
was an adult, therefore born in or before 1360. Therefore John's father Theobald
would have been born prior to 1343 and his mother prior to 1344 (making him at least
17 and her 16 at the time of his birth). This fits with Theobald's father, also named
Theobald who was born in 1322 (Cal. Fine Rolls 1 Edw III).
1. Hugh of Haccombe Courtenay and his fourth wife Maud Beaumont. Hugh was
born after 1358 as he was the younger son of Sir Edward Courtenay and Emeline
Dauney and their eldest son, Edward "The Blind Earl" was born 3 May 1357. Hugh
married Maud Beaumont after 16 October 1417 (Faris). This Hugh was born too late
to be Margaret Courtenay, wife of Theobald Grenville's father.
2. Hugh, 2nd earl of Devon Courtenay and his wife Margaret Bohun. Hugh and
Margaret had 17 known children of which one was named Margaret who was their
eldest daughter and probably born about 1326. This Margaret married John, Lord
Cobham in 1332/33 and pre-deceased her husband, dying 2 Aug 1385. (C.P. III:344)
So this Margaret cannot have also married Theobald Grenville or been the mother of
John Grenville in about 1360.
3. Hugh Courtenay who married Elizabeth de Vere. This Hugh died in 1349 and
Elizabeth died in 1375, they were the parents of another Hugh Courtenay (of more
presently). However the following Close Rolls entry, shows they had no other living
issue in 1375, by which time John Grenville was certainly alive and would have
inherited had he been the grandson of this Hugh Courtenay.
From the Calendar of Close Rolls. Dated 1375 Nov. 27 at Westminster: "To Thomas
Sewale escheator in Buckinghamshire. Order to remove the king's hand, and not to
meddle further with the manor of Wavyngdon taken into the king's hand by the
death of Elizabeth who was wife of Hugh de Courtenay the younger, delivering to
Hugh de Courtenay earl of Devon any issues thereof taken; as the king has learned
by inquisition, taken by the escheator, that the said Elizabeth at her death held no
lands in that bailiwick in her demesne as of fee nor in service, but held the same
manor in fee tail by grant of the said earl made by fine levied in the king's court with
his licence to the said Hugh the younger and Elizabeth and to the heirs of their
bodies, with reversion for lack of such an heir to the earl and his heirs, that Hugh the
younger and Elizabeth are dead without issue, wherefore the said manor ought by
the form of that fine to revert to the earl and his heirs, and that it is held in chief by
knight service."
4. Hugh Courtenay who married Margaret de Brian then Maud Holand. This Hugh
Courtenay was the son of Hugh number 3. above, he died s.p. 20 February 1373/74
(C.P. IV:325) which fits with the entry above that shows his parents were "dead
without issue" in 1375. Additionally, this Hugh's father was not born until 1327, so could
not have had a great-grandson born in or before 1360. Lastly, another Close Rolls
entry dated December 6 1374 shows he had no issue by Maud Holand.
"To Oliver de Harnham escheator in Berkshire. Order to remove the king's hand, and
not to meddle further with the manor of Sutton Courtenay taken into the king's hand
by the death of Hugh son of Hugh de Courtenay knight, delivering to Maud late his
wife any issues thereof taken; as the king has learned by inquisition, taken by the
escheator, that Hugh de Courtenay knight at his death held no lands in that county in
chief in his demesne as of fee, but held the said manor in chief by knight service in
right of said Maud by gift and feoffment of Hugh de Courtenay earl of Devon made
with the king's licence to her and the heirs of her body by her said husband begotten,
with reversion for lack of such issue to the said earl and his heirs, and that the said
Hugh son of Hugh died without issue by her; and the king has taken the fealty of the
said Maud."
5. Thomas Courtenay who married Muriel Moels on 21 August 1337 (Weis 214-33).
Thomas was the son of Hugh Courtenay, 1st earl of Devon and his wife Agnes St.
John. Thomas and Muriel had a daughter Margaret who was born about 1352 (IPM of
her brother Hugh Courtenay 20 September 43 Edw III). This Margaret married Thomas
Peverell between 1369 (her brother's death when she was named as an heir) and
1374 when she is mentioned as having land assigned to "Thomas Peverell and
Margaret his wife." She is too young to have had an earlier marriage to Theobald and
produce a son before 1360 (i.e. before she was 8) and also Theobald lived later than
1374 when she was married to Thomas Peverell.
6. Sir Edward Courtenay of Godlington who married Emeline Dauney. Edward was
born in or after 1328 but more likely 1331 (Weis & Visitation). He married Emeline in
about 1348, too late for them to be the parents of Margaret Courtenay, born before
1344. Even if this Edward was born in 1328, he would have only been 16 when he
fathered Margaret, even for the period this is unlikely.
As far as is known that accounts for all the Hughs and all the Margarets from the
period. If Theobald Grenville did marry a Courtenay, which despite the above and
the lack of grants from the Courtenays to the Grenvilles, is possible, she would need
to be of the same generation as the children of Hugh 2nd Earl of Devon Courtenay
and his wife Margaret Bohun, that is, born in the late 1330's or 1340's.
If Margaret, wife of Theobald Grenville, was a Courtenay, she is most likely to be
found as a granddaughter of Sir Hugh Courtenay, 1 st Earl of Devon (d 1340) and his
wife Agnes St John by one of their children other than Hugh Courtenay and Margaret
Bohun. A less appealing alternative is that Margaret was not a Courtenay at all, but
the widow of one of the Courtenay men.

Subject: Powderham Castle in America
Dear Sir:
I am trying to trace a line drawing made by the late Madeline Thatcher of "Powderham
Castle" in America. In my research, I ran across a mention of the Courtenay's of
Baltimore, Maryland, and of Pennsylvania. I would very much like to know if you know of
the American version of this house. In my research, I have come across numerous references
to Powderham Castle in the U.K. but have been unable to trace the source of the house by
this name in America.
I would appreciate any information or other sources you could provide. Thank you for your
time and attention to this matter.

Courtenay has been my family's middle name for generations, always alongside Wheller (but
without a hyphen).
>
The Wheller family was from Devon, though now spread around UK.
>
The family explanation (or perhaps myth) has been that many generations ago one of the
Courtenays was a little wayward with the domestic help.
This led to an illegitimate birth. Given
the social system of the time, the mother was not able to legitimise the child but instead
inserted the Courtenay name into the family name as an ongoing reminder.
> A
fanciful family legend? Quite possibly. But I
would be interested to know if anyone was aware of whether such namings in such
circumstances were common practice or even perhaps if there was a more 'legitimate'
connection between the Courtenays and Whellers in times gone past.
